Yes, Trump might seem like a joke. That joke belies how dangerous the man's immigration policy is. From his website:
Nationwide e-verify. This simple measure will protect jobs for unemployed Americans. A central computer system that decides who gets to work and who doesn't. What could ever go wrong. Detention—not catch-and-release. Illegal aliens apprehended crossing the border must be detained until they are sent home, no more catch-and-release. Put illegal immigrants in camps. Enhanced penalties for overstaying a visa. Millions of people come to the United States on temporary visas but refuse to leave, without consequence. This is a threat to national security. Individuals who refuse to leave at the time their visa expires should be subject to criminal penalties; this will also help give local jurisdictions the power to hold visa overstays until federal authorities arrive. Completion of a visa tracking system – required by law but blocked by lobbyists – will be necessary as well. A national tracking system. If we don't like you, you get to go into the camps. End birthright citizenship. This remains the biggest magnet for illegal immigration. B Change the constitution so that we can put more people into the camps.Actually never mind about actually changing the constitution, Trump has suggested the simply getting a court to rule that at least one parent must be a citizen for a child to be a citizen. And how many generations back is that going to go. Lets see:
African-Americans: If you interpret Dred Scott as still good law, then freed slaves did not become citizens and neither did their children. So unless an African-American can show that one of their parents actually held citizenship after 1865, into the camps with them.
Native Americans: Got somebody with citizenship papers in your family tree? No? Into the camps with you.
Hispanics: See Native-Americans above.
So let's see Trump want herd millions of illegal immigrants into prison camps pending deportation. To that he will strip millions more Americans of their citizenship and civil rights and put them into camps pending deportation to where?
Once we have these millions of people in camps, the next question would be how to deport them. A bus or plane ticket is expensive, a bullet relatively cheap. How long until the solution to the immigration problem becomes the final solution to the immigration problem?
This guy isn't a joke, he's the most dangerous politician we are likely to see in our lifetimes. Instead of laughing at the Republican Party's misfortune we should be asking how do we stop this? We need to be acting now to do whatever we can to stop this guy, not sitting back as smirking about how much he helps Democrats election chances. What happens is we're wrong and he wins?
