Somebody in the comments has pointed out that a Russian claim to all areas that were Russian Orthodox would include Alaska and parts of the West Coast. I’m not sure this is what Putin meant. Normally world leaders are careful to avoid announcing doctrines that might give them claim to third parties soil (especially if that soil happens to be part of the US). That nobody in the Kremlin caught this, or that they ignored it, is deeply worrying.
