ActBlue has shut down the ability to request a continuing monthly donation on the first ask page. Above is a picture from prior to the general election. It clearly has an ask button on the front page. ActBlue has removed the feature to let you have that kind of button. You can ask for a recurring donation, but only on a popup after the first page. What this means is that it’s basically impossible to run online advertising asking for recurring donations (Trump did this in the last election to great success). Sure you can ask but donors are going to get so confused by not having the button right front in center, that nobody is going to convert. Worse, if you mention continued donations, donors may become so convinced that something shady is going on because the button isn’t front and center that they fail to complete the donation.
So there you are. We have become a party so divided by the question of how much influence small donors should have that we have removed the option for them to contribute over time. I’m sure it’s a great victory for the Hillary folks over the Bernie folks but detailed things like this are what cost Democrats elections.
